Floor and concrete boundaries

Hallway flooring when rooms are renovated separately

Should the hall floor come out with the first room or stay until later?

Treat the hallway as both a retained surface and a route between work areas. Removing it early may simplify some transitions but change access for later phases. Keeping it may require temporary boundaries that the flooring installer must accept. Neither choice follows automatically from the order of room renovations.

Planning guidance by MetroPoint Demolition. Site conditions and the agreed professional scope determine the final removal.

Compare the boundaries

  1. Hall retained throughout

Define protection and room-edge stopping points before the first room starts.

  2. Hall removed in a later phase

Identify temporary transitions and the condition needed for use between phases.

  3. Continuous replacement

Coordinate access and installation sequencing across the full area rather than pricing isolated room labels.

Make the transitions visible in the phase plan

Draw each room opening and note which surfaces remain during that phase. Include doors, closets and stair landings reached from the hall. A plan that names only bedrooms misses the shared route where people and debris still travel. The contractor must assess whether the proposed occupancy and access arrangement is workable.

Ask the floor installer who owns temporary edge protection and final joins. If the same finish runs continuously through several rooms, the removal boundary may need adjustment. Agree those changes before the first phase so later work does not unexpectedly disturb a completed area.

Questions for the assessment

  • Which routes remain usable between phases?
  • Who maintains temporary floor edges?
  • Does the replacement run continuously through the hall?
