Removing a bulkhead when the service route remains

What if I want a bulkhead gone but the duct or pipe inside still has to stay?

Separate removal of the enclosure from relocation of what it conceals. If the service route remains, the final design may need a revised enclosure rather than an unobstructed ceiling. The service contractor and designer should establish the available space before MetroPoint scopes the surrounding finish removal.

Planning guidance by MetroPoint Demolition. Site conditions and the agreed professional scope determine the final removal.

Compare the boundaries

  1. Expose for review

A defined opening can let the responsible professional confirm the route, where authorised.

  2. Enclosure replaced

State the old lining to remove and the service to protect while a new enclosure is designed.

  3. Service relocated

That work belongs to the appropriate trade and is a dependency, not a demolition assumption.

State the clearance problem you are solving

A bulkhead may interfere with a cabinet, door or desired ceiling height. Give the designer those requirements and available drawings instead of specifying that the entire box must disappear. Removing its skin does not move the duct, change the structure or settle the new enclosure dimensions.

Document where the enclosure starts and ends and whether it passes into another room. A service that continues outside the visible work area can connect the decision to retained space. Ask who authorises the final removal extent after the route is confirmed and who reinstates enclosure or fire-protection details where required.

Questions for the assessment

  • Which service is intended to remain?
  • What clearance is needed for the new work?
  • Who designs and builds the replacement enclosure?

Choose the next step

Read the matching service scope and exclusions, then describe what you want removed and what must remain. Your service choice can be corrected in the form.
