Floor and concrete boundaries

Floor registers during flooring removal: what stays?

How should floor vents be described when the finish around them is removed?

Separate the removable register cover from the duct opening and the surrounding floor build-up. A flooring scope should not silently include alteration of an operating air system. The heating contractor and flooring installer should resolve the opening and finished-height details where the new floor changes them.

Planning guidance by MetroPoint Demolition. Site conditions and the agreed professional scope determine the final removal.

Compare the boundaries

  1. Cover retained

Label its room and opening so it can be kept with the correct location.

  2. Duct retained

Record the opening as a protected service interface, not a debris route.

  3. Opening changes

A moved or resized register requires separate design and trade direction before floor removal extends into it.

Tie each opening to the new floor detail

Take a room view and an accessible close view of each register. Do not lift unknown assemblies or reach into ducts to determine how they are connected. The removal team needs to know which openings remain, while the HVAC contractor determines how operating services are managed during work.

A replacement floor may sit at a different height from the old finish. Ask the installer how the register edge will be finished and who supplies any altered fitting. Counting vents is useful, but a numbered location list is more reliable than an instruction to keep all grilles when several rooms are involved.

Questions for the assessment

  • Which covers are to be kept?
  • Are any openings moving?
  • Who resolves the register height after the new floor is installed?

Choose the next step
