Floor and concrete boundaries
Floor topping or concrete slab: establish the layer first
Is the cement-like layer under my floor a topping or the slab itself?
Its appearance is not enough to decide. A floor can contain finish, setting or levelling layers above structural or ground-supported concrete. Before asking for removal to a particular depth, have the assembly and intended stopping surface established by the appropriate project professionals.
Planning guidance by MetroPoint Demolition. Site conditions and the agreed professional scope determine the final removal.
Compare the boundaries
Finish or setting layer
The flooring installer defines what must be removed for the proposed replacement.
Topping of uncertain role
Treat its composition, attachment and function as unresolved until assessed.
Slab removal
This is a separate concrete scope with structural and service questions, not an extension of routine floor stripping.
Use evidence from drawings and authorised exposure
Supply available construction drawings, previous renovation records and photographs of already exposed edges. Do not create test holes or chip the floor to identify it yourself. The assessment may need further investigation before a removal method or depth can be agreed.
Ask the new installer what substrate condition they need and the designer which layers must remain. If those instructions refer to different surfaces, resolve the difference first. MetroPoint assesses concrete breaking and removal within its established scope; this guide does not add concrete cutting, drilling, scanning or specialist surface-preparation services.
Questions for the assessment
- What is the source of the layer identification?
- Which surface does the new installer need?
- Who approves any removal that reaches the slab?
Choose the next step
Read the matching service scope and exclusions, then describe what you want removed and what must remain. Your service choice can be corrected in the form.
