Floor and concrete boundaries

Removing flooring in one room: where is the stopping line?

How do I keep flooring in the next room when the same finish runs through both?

A doorway is a convenient place to describe a boundary, but it may not coincide with a joint in the flooring. Identify the exact retained edge and ask the new installer how the two surfaces will meet. A room name alone leaves the transition undecided.

Planning guidance by MetroPoint Demolition. Site conditions and the agreed professional scope determine the final removal.

Compare the boundaries

  1. Existing threshold

Record whether the strip and its supporting area stay or leave.

  2. Continuous boards or sheet

The installer must define a workable transition; do not assume the visible room boundary separates the material.

  3. Future open-plan area

If the doorway will disappear, review the flooring decision against the new layout rather than the old room labels.

Compare the old and new layouts together

Show the direction of boards, visible joints and the planned replacement floor on one sketch. The assessment needs to distinguish the removable surface from any backing or subfloor that continues into the retained room. Mark furniture and doors that limit access to the edge.

The removal scope should record where work stops and what finish preparation belongs to the flooring installer. If a continuous material cannot be separated as planned without affecting the retained side, request a revised boundary before continuing. This is a coordination question rather than a reason to remove the adjoining room automatically.

Questions for the assessment

  • Is the transition visible in the new layout?
  • Does the backing continue across the boundary?
  • Who accepts the retained edge?
