One room on hold: can other demolition scopes proceed?

How should a scope be split when one area is awaiting a separate decision?

An unresolved room is not automatically independent of the rest of the work. Shared services, access, structure and containment may link it to adjacent areas. Ask the project team to identify genuinely separable work before releasing any other zone; the aim is a clear boundary, not pressure to work around an unresolved risk.

Planning guidance by MetroPoint Demolition. Site conditions and the agreed professional scope determine the final removal.

Compare the boundaries

  1. Independent area

Proceed only where the responsible parties confirm that access and dependencies are separate.

  2. Shared dependency

Keep affected adjoining work on hold if it relies on the unresolved area.

  3. Revised boundary

A designer or specialist may define a smaller released zone; record that revision before work changes.

Name the reason and the release authority

A hold can relate to a missing owner decision, a trade disconnection, a material assessment or a design question. Record which one applies and who can resolve it. A contractor’s availability or an owner’s desire to continue does not replace the required technical decision.

Give every area a recognisable name and mark retained routes on the same plan. If the held area contains the only exit or a shared service route, it may affect the wider sequence. Record the permitted work as well as the prohibited work so the crew and owner have the same current instruction. This is scope coordination, not a generic promise that unaffected work can always continue.

Questions for the assessment

  • What exactly is on hold?
  • Which other zones depend on it?
  • Who can formally release or change the boundary?

Choose the next step

Read the matching service scope and exclusions, then describe what you want removed and what must remain. Your service choice can be corrected in the form.
