Theatre and cinema refurbishment: defining ordinary interior demolition
A theatre or cinema refurbishment can contain an ordinary visitor-space demolition package alongside specialist venue work. Define that package through the lobby, concession, washrooms and auditorium edges. Do not treat stage machinery, projection systems or acoustic assemblies as ordinary fixed interiors.
Planning guidance by MetroPoint Demolition. Illustrative comparisons describe decisions, not completed projects.
Compare three visitor-space options
| Project | Ordinary removal discussion | Boundary to retain or review |
|---|---|---|
| Lobby refresh | Selected fixed counters and finishes | Doors and connected visitor systems |
| Concession reconfiguration | Defined joinery, partitions and adjoining finishes | Food equipment and affected service providers |
| Connected visitor-area refit | Reviewed lobby, washroom and approach removals | Auditorium, stage and specialist installations |
These options compare physical scope, not venue-operating capacity or procurement eligibility. MetroPoint's ordinary interior assessment does not imply specialist rigging, heritage conservation or public-contract qualifications.
Illustrative visitor-space plan
Trace a hypothetical route from entrance to lobby, past the concession, towards washrooms and the auditorium doors. Mark the ordinary removals beside each part of that route. At the auditorium edge, draw a clear review boundary for seating systems, technical installations or acoustic construction that may need specialist direction.
The plan is illustrative, not an evacuation design or a completed MetroPoint project. The responsible venue and design professionals establish access, exits, system requirements and the actual construction arrangements.
Separate the counter from its operating systems
The concession provider and appropriate trades resolve connected equipment before affected joinery leaves. The same applies to ticketing, security and communications housed in lobby counters. Owner property and equipment need authorised destinations; they are not debris by default.
A retained auditorium can still share services and routes with the lobby. Its exclusion from ordinary demolition does not guarantee that performances or screenings can continue during the work.
Define the next fit-out stage
Ask the flooring, millwork and other receiving contractors what exposed condition they need at the visitor-space boundaries. Repair, specialist acoustic performance, projection commissioning and reopening remain outside the ordinary removal handover.
Bring the proposed visitor layout, retained venue areas and authorised project contact to the assessment. MetroPoint can discuss the conventional building removals while the venue's specialist packages remain clearly assigned.
