Window display removal versus storefront alteration

Can the interior display come out while the storefront remains?

An internal display platform or backdrop is not the same scope as storefront glazing, framing or exterior signage. State that the building envelope remains, then identify display components and any connections that meet it. A display fixed near glass needs assessment even when no glass removal is proposed.

Planning guidance by MetroPoint Demolition. Site conditions and the agreed professional scope determine the final removal.

Compare the boundaries

  1. Interior display

List plinths, shelving, backdrops and tenant decorations independently.

  2. Storefront retained

Keep glazing, entrance frames and exterior weathering outside the removal boundary.

  3. Illuminated display

Have the appropriate trade establish electrical status before connected elements are released.

Include the space between display and glass

Photographs should show the display from the shop side and, where accessible, the narrow area behind it. Do not move large panels or lean into glazing to obtain details. Product records or drawings can help identify whether the display is freestanding, fixed to the floor or connected to the facade.

Ask who will finish exposed fixings and surfaces after removal. If the new design needs a change to the storefront itself, route that as a separate reviewed scope with the landlord and appropriate installer. An internal display removal should not become an unplanned envelope opening.

Questions for the assessment

  • Is any display component fixed to the storefront?
  • Are lights or signs connected?
  • Who finishes the exposed interior attachment points?
