Alcove shelves or the whole recess: define the removal

Does removing built-in shelving include the wall behind it?

Shelves, cabinet bases, decorative surrounds and the recess itself can be different assemblies. If the purpose is to clear storage, leave the surrounding construction explicitly retained. If the purpose is to enlarge or flatten the room, the wall behind and beside the shelves needs a separate assessment.

Planning guidance by MetroPoint Demolition. Site conditions and the agreed professional scope determine the final removal.

Compare the boundaries

  1. Fittings only

List shelves, doors and cabinet boxes while keeping the alcove walls.

  2. Decorative surround

Identify pilasters, trim and panels separately from structural or masonry construction.

  3. Recess altered

Changes to the room boundary need design and service review; shelf removal does not authorise them.

Distinguish the furniture outline from the building outline

A floor-to-ceiling installation can look like part of the wall even when some components are joinery. Conversely, a painted panel may hide building construction or services. Supply photographs of open doors and visible ends without dismantling anything. Describe the intended final use of the recess.

If the shelving sits beside a fireplace or chimney, do not assume the surrounding masonry is redundant. Keep that assessment separate and retain the existing boundary until the responsible professional resolves it. The immediate scope can still address clearly identified fittings without claiming that an entire recess is removable.

Questions for the assessment

  • Do only the fittings leave?
  • Is a chimney or service enclosure adjacent?
  • What surface should the next trade receive?

Choose the next step

Read the matching service scope and exclusions, then describe what you want removed and what must remain. Your service choice can be corrected in the form.
