Walls and ceilings

Built-in pantry removal or closet-wall demolition?

Is the pantry a cabinet installation or part of the room construction?

A pantry may be freestanding furniture, fitted joinery or a framed enclosure. Those are different removal tasks even when the doors look similar. Describe the sides, top, base and adjoining walls, and ask whether the proposed change affects only storage fittings or the room boundary itself.

Planning guidance by MetroPoint Demolition. Site conditions and the agreed professional scope determine the final removal.

Compare the boundaries

  1. Cabinet installation

List shelves, doors and carcasses, with surrounding wall and floor finishes retained.

  2. Framed closet

Removing its side or front wall needs a wall assessment and defined ceiling/floor junctions.

  3. Mixed construction

Built-in shelves may be fixed into a framed enclosure. The scope must separate the fittings from the enclosure.

Describe the space you want left behind

If the goal is an appliance recess, give the designer the appliance requirements rather than asking the removal crew to create an approximate opening. If the goal is an open passage, structural status and services need review before a wall is included. A shallow closet is not evidence that its framing is non-structural.

Record whether the floor is continuous inside the pantry and whether ceiling finishes cross its front line. These observations help identify repair interfaces, but they do not establish hidden construction. A useful instruction states the intended remaining opening and the parties who will approve and finish it.

Questions for the assessment

  • Are only the shelves leaving, or the enclosure too?
  • Does the new use need a designed opening?
  • Which surfaces become visible after removal?
