Wall panelling removal: what is behind the decorative layer?
Does removing decorative panelling include battens, backing and framing?
Name the decorative layer and the intended stopping surface separately. Panelling may be attached to backing or battens, while other installations form part of a built-out wall. The visible finish does not establish which layers should leave or whether the remaining wall is ready for decoration.

Ask what the new finish needs
If the aim is to paint the room, the existing surface behind the panels may require repair or replacement. If new panels are planned, the installer may have different backing requirements. Share that intended result at the site review so removal does not stop at the wrong layer.
Note switches, radiators, fitted cupboards and window returns that interrupt the panelling. These interfaces can leave small retained pieces or require other trades before removal. Older coatings and concealed materials need assessment appropriate to the work; appearance alone does not clear them. Record unknown backing as a review item rather than assuming a sound original wall.
