Kitchen decisions

Can the backsplash come out while the counter stays?

How should I scope backsplash removal when the countertop and cabinets are staying?

Treat the backsplash as a separate wall-finish removal, with the counter edge, cabinet ends and electrical devices explicitly retained. Keeping the counter does not guarantee that the wall behind the tile will remain suitable for a new finish. The tile setter needs to define the acceptable backing condition before removal is priced.

Planning guidance by MetroPoint Demolition. Site conditions and the agreed professional scope determine the final removal.

Compare the boundaries

  1. Tile only

Ask whether the tile and adhesive can be separated without assuming the backing is reusable.

  2. Tile and backing

A larger opening may be appropriate when the replacement design requires new backing. Confirm where that opening ends.

  3. Counter junction

Record the seam, upstand and end panels as retained interfaces. Replacing a damaged edge is not automatically included.

Agree what happens behind the tile

A photograph of the whole kitchen is useful, but a close view of each tile edge answers a different question: what does the tile meet? Note outlets, window trim, cabinet undersides and any short return around a corner. Do not detach devices or open the wall to obtain the photograph. The appropriate trade resolves affected electrical work.

Ask the next installer whether they need a bare board face, replacement board or a different wall build-up. If the existing adhesive tears the backing, a pre-agreed review point prevents a small backsplash job from silently becoming a whole-wall strip-out. This is an assessment choice, not a promise that bonded tile can be removed intact.

Questions for the assessment

  • Which counter edges and upstands stay?
  • What wall condition has the new installer requested?
  • Who decides if removal needs to extend behind a cabinet?
