Kitchen island or peninsula removal: different boundaries
Why does removing an island need a different scope from removing a peninsula?
An island has a floor footprint surrounded by the room. A peninsula also connects to a wall or another cabinet run. Both can contain services, but a peninsula adds a junction that must be resolved before it is treated as a freestanding item. Ask what remains at the floor and at every connected surface.
Planning guidance by MetroPoint Demolition. Site conditions and the agreed professional scope determine the final removal.
Compare the boundaries
Freestanding island
Record the footprint and any sink, cooktop or electrical connection without assuming that an apparently movable unit is disconnected.
Peninsula
Identify the shared countertop, cabinet end and wall junction that define the retained kitchen.
Replacement footprint
Compare old and new layouts. A smaller replacement can expose gaps in the floor or unfinished cabinet sides.
Follow the footprint into the replacement design
An empty room photograph cannot establish what is beneath the cabinet bases. Ask whether the flooring is known to continue underneath; leave unknown areas marked for review instead of assuming a continuous finished floor. A new island in a different position may require work by the flooring installer and service trades beyond removal.
Counter sections sometimes run across the join between a peninsula and the retained run. The removal assessment must establish whether that joint can be separated as proposed and who supplies the remaining finished edge. MetroPoint can assess the removal boundary; the kitchen designer and installers decide the replacement details.
Questions for the assessment
- Which services feed the unit?
- Does a countertop cross the retained boundary?
- Will the new footprint expose unfinished flooring?
