MetroPoint Demolition

Finished Basement Demolition in Toronto

Older finished basements often hide damp insulation, tired panelling and layouts that no longer suit the house. Taking the finishes out lets you see the foundation walls, the slab and the services before a new plan is drawn.

MetroPoint strips finished basements in detached homes, semis and rowhouses throughout Downsview, midtown west and the wider City of Toronto, carrying everything out through the tight stairs and side doors that most basements have.

Is this the right scope?

Remove a finished basement interior for a new layout.

Removing basement finishes is different from breaking a slab, altering a foundation or lowering a floor. Those changes require their own scope.

Where this scope stops

Underpinning, excavation, foundation alteration and new mechanical work are not implied by a basement interior tear-out.

How the job runs

  1. 01

    Survey and walk-through

We review the survey, map the mechanical room and confirm which walls and rooms come out.

  2. 02

    Services made safe

Your electrician and plumber isolate circuits and cap lines in the areas being removed.

  3. 03

    Protect the stairs

The basement stairs, main floor path and exit door are covered for the carry-out.

  4. 04

    Ceilings first

Ceilings come down before walls so wiring and ductwork are visible early.

  5. 05

    Walls and floors

Panelling, framing, insulation and flooring are removed room by room.

  6. 06

    Clear and sweep

Debris is loaded out, the slab is swept and the mechanical room is checked.

Before we start

Before we are booked, the owner arranges a designated substances survey as required by OHSA section 30. Basements can contain older pipe wrap, floor tile and ceiling texture, so the survey guides what can be touched.

Where affected asbestos-containing material requires removal, a qualified abatement contractor completes it under O. Reg. 278/05 first; MetroPoint does not do abatement. Clear storage out of the basement, keep a path open to the furnace, water heater and electrical panel, and have your trades isolate the areas coming out.

Visible work examples

  • Long interior room with exposed brick walls and timber flooring
  • Room stripped back to its wood framing
  • Crew member checking exposed interior framing
  • Large room opened back to the structural framing
  • Lower wall opened around visible electrical wiring

Questions and answers

Will my furnace and water heater stay accessible?
Yes. The mechanical room is protected and kept reachable for the whole job. We agree equipment protection and airflow with the heating contractor before work, keep required access clear and never stack debris in front of the panel, furnace or water heater. If a wall around the mechanical room is coming out, we plan the order so access is never blocked.
Do you break up the basement slab too?
Finished basement demolition stops at the top of the concrete. Defined concrete breaking and removal can be assessed as a separate scope. Floor lowering, underpinning, excavation and new drainage require their own design and specialist responsibilities and are not implied by our slab-removal service.
What happens if you find mould behind the panelling?
We stop in that area and let you know. Visible mould behind basement finishes is common, and depending on its extent you may want a specialist to assess and remediate it before removals continue. We then resume the scope once the area has been cleared to proceed.
Can you remove a basement bathroom and laundry area?
Yes. Once your plumber has capped the lines, we remove the toilet, shower, vanity, laundry tub and surrounding walls and floor finishes. Drains are plugged and protected while the rest of the basement is stripped. Appliances you keep are moved and covered.
How is debris carried out of a basement?
By hand through the existing stairs or a walkout door, bagged or bundled to fit. We protect the stair treads, walls and the main floor path, and stage a bin or truck as close to the exit as the property allows. Where there is a side door, we use it to avoid the main floor entirely.
