Bathroom Demolition in Toronto

A bathroom renovation usually starts with the heaviest, dustiest part of the job: breaking out tile, mortar beds and old fixtures in a small room. Our crew does that work cleanly so your contractor inherits open walls and a clear floor.

We handle bathroom gut-outs for homeowners, renovators and property managers in Downsview, midtown west and every other part of the City of Toronto, from a single powder room to stacked ensuites.

Is this the right scope?

Clear the bathroom to the depth required by the new design.

Removing fixtures and tile does not necessarily include the subfloor, wall assembly or framing. Agree the stopping point before the room is opened.

Where this scope stops

Plumbing changes, new waterproofing and rebuilding are separate from demolition. Concealed damage needs review before extending the scope.

  • Tubs, shower bases and one-piece tub and shower units

How the job runs

  1. 01

    Walk the room

We look at access, the floor build-up and which walls open, and check the survey results for tile and flooring.

  2. 02

    Water off

Your plumber shuts off the supply and caps the lines feeding the room before we begin.

  3. 03

    Seal and cover

The doorway is sealed and hallways and stairs get protective runners.

  4. 04

    Fixtures out

Toilet, vanity, glass and the tub or shower unit are removed and carried out.

  5. 05

    Tile and mortar

Walls and floor tile are broken out, with drains plugged so debris cannot fall into the lines.

  6. 06

    Clean handover

The room is swept, vacuumed and walked with you against the scope.

Before we start

Older ceramic tile adhesive, sheet flooring and plaster behind tile are often sampled. Your designated substances survey, which OHSA section 30 places on the owner before the work is arranged, needs to be complete so we know what sits behind the tile.

Affected asbestos-containing material is addressed by a qualified abatement contractor under O. Reg. 278/05, including required removal before our affected work. We are not an abatement company and our work follows theirs. Empty the room, arrange your plumber for the shut-off and tell us about any fixture you want to keep.

Visible work examples

  • Lower wall opened around visible electrical wiring
  • Room with some floor and wall finishes already removed
  • Wall opened to reveal old wood lath

Questions and answers

How do you stop debris going down the drains?
Once the fixtures are out, every open drain and toilet flange is plugged and covered before any tile is broken. Covers stay in place until the floor is clear. This protects your plumbing stack and avoids the blocked lines that can show up weeks later when a renovator first runs water through a new fixture.
Can you take out a cast iron tub?
Yes. Cast iron tubs are heavy, so we either carry them out whole with enough crew or break them in place under cover when they are not being kept. Breaking one is loud but quick. We plan the route down stairs and through doorways at the site walk so walls and railings are protected.
Do you remove the mortar bed under old floor tile?
When it is in the scope, yes. Many older Toronto bathrooms have a thick mortar bed that must come out to reach the subfloor or to level for a new floor. We break it up, bag it and carry it out, then leave the subfloor exposed for your contractor to assess.
Can you work in a condo bathroom?
We do, following building rules on elevator bookings, working hours and protection of common areas. Condo bathrooms often sit over another unit, so the crew takes extra care with drains and the floor. We ask for the management office's requirements early so they are built into the plan.
